`set display.flip 0|1` (also off/on) turns the panel 180 degrees from its
compiled DISPLAY_ROTATION, persisted in MQTTPrefs alongside display.timeout
and applied live without a reboot.
Adding 2 to the compiled rotation rather than setting an absolute value keeps
portrait portrait and landscape landscape, so the DisplayViewport geometry
never changes with it and the setting cannot produce a nonsensical mix.
DisplayDriver gains a defaulted no-op setFlipped(), so no other display
driver is affected.
The compiled rotation was verified identical across `pio run` and `build.sh`
on two machines (movi a11, 2 at the setRotation call site), yet the panel read
upside down for one tester and upright for another - which is what a board
mounted either way up looks like. No single compiled constant satisfies both,
so orientation becomes a setting rather than another rebuild.
Runtime-only, like display_timeout_secs: LegacyV1MQTTPrefs and the frozen
binary payload sizes are untouched, and the JSON group is an append that older
firmware skips.
Replace the sparse Heltec V4 R8 observer home screen with a padded dark
analytics dashboard, add manual display control, and make blanking a runtime
setting.
Dashboard (DISPLAY_ACTIVITY_DASHBOARD, the four R8 TFT observer envs):
- RadioActivityWindow: 20 one-minute buckets of valid RX packets, no heap.
The caller's 32-bit millis() is extended to a monotonic 64-bit clock, so
nothing downstream has a rollover case; an always-on node passes 2^32 ms
after ~49.7 days, which would otherwise re-enter warm-up and divide 20
minutes of traffic by seconds. Rates use 19 whole minutes plus the elapsed
part of the current one rather than a fixed 1200 s.
- ObserverDashboard: header, radio strip, headline totals, a 20-bar
packets-per-minute graph and RF/status footers, with separate portrait and
landscape layouts. A text row is a fixed 16 px, which is 3.2 logical units
in portrait but 4.27 in landscape, so one shared grid would overlap.
Text is trimmed by character budget, not measured width: getTextWidth()
reports an over-long string at the portrait driver's fallback scale, so
DisplayDriver::drawTextEllipsized() under-trims and the row renders at half
height.
- Six per-row signatures computed from what is actually drawn, so only the
rows whose pixels changed repaint. No startFrame(), no whole-screen clear.
Link state moved out of the full-frame signature, so a DHCP renewal or WiFi
flap repaints one footer row instead of the panel.
- Dark theme by retuning the UIColor statics at runtime, which needs no
display-driver edit and carries boot, setup, reboot and power-off with it.
Touch and button (DISPLAY_TOUCH_TOGGLE):
- CHSC6X at I2C 0x2E, polled; TP_INT is unusable (optional R13, and GPIO 43
is U0TXD). The point-count byte is tested against a valid count, never
against non-zero: an idle read returns 0xFF, which reads as a finger held
down forever and latches the tap detector after one event.
- turnOff() no longer parks PIN_TFT_RST low on this board. GPIO 21 is a
shared LCD_RST/TP_RST net, so doing that held the touch controller in
reset for as long as the display was off. Verified against Heltec's
expansion-board and mainboard schematics and the V4-R8 datasheet pinout,
which also correct the pin comment in HeltecV4R8Board.cpp.
- The USER button click now toggles the display too; it previously did
nothing whenever the display was already on.
display.timeout:
- `set display.timeout <secs>` / `get display.timeout`, 0 = stay on, 60 s
default, 3600 max. Read live, so a change applies without a reboot and
restarts the countdown rather than firing on the old deadline.
- Stored in MQTTPrefs (/mqtt.json), keeping NodePrefs aligned with upstream.
Runtime-only: LegacyV1MQTTPrefs and the four frozen binary payload sizes
are unchanged. No JSON format-version bump - the loader skips keys no
def() claims, so older firmware reads newer files and this firmware reads
older ones with the default applied. Both directions are covered by tests.
- Joins the observer atomic-setter contract, so a failed save rolls the live
value back instead of only claiming to.
New periodic work uses a wrap-safe deadline check; `millis() >= deadline`
fires every loop for a whole interval before each rollover.
Adds test_radio_activity_window, test_observer_dashboard (driving the real
renderer against a recording DisplayDriver in both orientation profiles) and
test_touch_tap_detector. 440 native cases pass.
Publishing moves the old primary to .bak before the verified temp takes
that name, so a failed second rename left the new image exactly where
boot recovery promotes it — while the observer setter told the operator
the change had been rolled back. The refused value came back at the next
reset.
Restore the backup and discard the temp on that path, and distinguish
CommitIndeterminate from CommitFailed when the filesystem cannot be put
back, so the CLI reply says the flash state is unresolved rather than
claiming the change is gone. The indeterminate condition latches for the
boot: the artifact left behind also makes every later transaction fail to
begin, so it cannot clear itself.
Also state the version-first rule the future-version probe depends on.
The probe reads the root version with this firmware's grammar, so a newer
file that introduces unknown syntax ahead of that field reads as corrupt
rather than future and loses its preservation guarantee.
Tests: publish-failure rollback and the indeterminate outcome against a
SPIFFS-shaped store fake; the version-first writer invariant and the cost
of violating it; /prefs.json coverage for the strict shape checks
(deployed-shape file, unknown nested groups, torn files, mismatches).
Neighbors publication was gated on BOARD_HAS_PSRAM. Removing that gate alone
was not enough: the feature built but was inert without PSRAM, because three
allocation sites asked for MALLOC_CAP_SPIRAM (which returns null with no
PSRAM), the bridge's persistent buffer was allocated inside a BOARD_HAS_PSRAM
block, and neighborDiscoverReady() rejected every pass at runtime on
psramFound(). The entry table also did not fit: finishNeighborDiscover put
pubkey_hex[50][65] plus entries[50] on the stack, a 4752-byte frame against
the mesh loop task's 8 KB.
- Gate on MAX_NEIGHBOURS plus PSRAM or an explicit per-variant
MQTT_NEIGHBORS_WITHOUT_PSRAM opt-in.
- Move the entry table and its hex strings into one heap block sized to the
pass; the frame drops from 4752 to 304 bytes.
- Prefer PSRAM and fall back to internal DRAM in the mesh-side allocations
and the ArduinoJson pool; hoist the bridge's persistent buffer out of the
BOARD_HAS_PSRAM block (psram_malloc already falls back).
- Keep the runtime psramFound() check only where the buffers are sized for
PSRAM, so a board whose PSRAM failed to init still refuses.
- Size for internal DRAM without PSRAM: 4 KB text buffer and 20 entries per
publish, keeping the pool to a single block and the peak near 13 KB rather
than ~35 KB. Oversized tables truncate and report total_neighbors as before.
Enabled on the ESP32-S3 observer envs (Heltec V3/WSL3, RAK3112, Heltec
Tracker v1.1/v2). Left off for the classic ESP32 T-LoRa V2.1-1.6, which is
already limited to one active TLS slot.
Costs ~7.4 KB static DRAM on repeaters and ~9.6 KB on room servers. The
prefs layout is unchanged, so this is neutral for existing devices.
Add support for named packet types in per-slot filters, allowing users
to specify packet types using descriptive names alongside numeric values.
This improves usability and clarity in configuring MQTT slot filters.
Updates include modifications to the parsing logic, WebConfig interface,
and related documentation to reflect the new naming conventions.
Introduce per-slot packet filters to allow users to specify which
packet types are uploaded for each MQTT slot. This feature enhances
the flexibility of the MQTT bridge by enabling users to configure
allowlists for packet types, improving the efficiency of data
transmissions. The implementation includes updates to the WebConfig
interface, internal handling of packet filters, and necessary
modifications to the MQTT preferences structure.
Update the CommonCLI_Observer to mask sensitive data such as passwords
and WiFi credentials in responses when accessed remotely. This change
ensures that sensitive information is only visible over serial,
enhancing security and preventing accidental exposure of credentials.
Improve the response message for the `alert test` command to clarify
that a successful test send does not guarantee automatic alerts are
enabled. This change helps prevent confusion for operators regarding
the status of the alert system after testing.
Add a new classification mechanism for MQTT slot activation to inform
users whether a slot will connect on the current hardware. This includes
detailed handling of enabled slots and their limits, improving the CLI's
ability to provide accurate feedback during configuration. Additionally,
unit tests are introduced to validate the new functionality across various
scenarios, enhancing overall robustness.
Adjust the command handling in CommonCLI_Observer to prioritize the
more specific "timezone.offset" check before the general "timezone"
check. This change prevents incorrect responses when querying the
timezone offset, improving the clarity and correctness of command
responses.
Enhance the command handling in CommonCLI_Observer to clarify the
compilation behavior under different configurations. Additionally,
optimize memory pressure checks in MQTTBridge to reduce unnecessary
heap walks, improving performance during sustained memory pressure.
This change ensures that publishes are skipped only when necessary,
enhancing overall stability.
Port the neighbors CLI from mqtt-bridge-implementation-flex:
- set mqtt.neighbors on|off - enable/disable periodic publishing
- set mqtt.neighbors.interval <h> - 12-336 hours (rejected, not clamped), stored ms
- get mqtt.neighbors - "on"/"off"
- get mqtt.neighbors.interval - "> <hours> hours (<ms> ms)" (ceiling division)
Both gated on WITH_MQTT_NEIGHBORS with a WITH_MQTT_BRIDGE stub replying
"Err - not supported (requires PSRAM)" on non-PSRAM builds. Handlers only write
prefs + savePrefs() — the mesh loop reads them live, so no bridge restart and no
direct bridge/MyMesh call (matches flex).
Token ordering preserved: SET tokens keep their trailing space so the shorter
"mqtt.neighbors " can precede "mqtt.neighbors.interval "; GET tokens have no
trailing space so the longer ".interval" is tested first.
UTF-8 em-dashes (U+2014) inside MQTT_DEBUG_PRINTLN / CLI reply strings
render as mojibake ("aEUR"-style, e.g. cooperative stop garbles) on
consoles that don't decode UTF-8. Replace the em-dashes in printed
strings with ASCII '-'. Comments are intentionally left unchanged (they
never reach the console; rewriting them would be needless churn in a
merge-sensitive file).
Verified on V3: the stop message now emits pure ASCII -- zero non-ASCII
bytes in the boot+stop console capture.
Include detailed instructions for local testing of observer and WiFi
functionality without hardware. Document the use of a mock backend and
Wokwi ESP32-S3 simulation for easier development and testing.
Enhance the MQTT implementation documentation to improve developer
experience and facilitate testing workflows.
Introduce a web configuration portal for easier node management and
provisioning without serial CLI. Enhance MQTT functionality with
improved IATA code validation, dynamic slot management, and
background NTP synchronization. Update web UI elements for better
user experience and security notes regarding open AP usage.
The 30s "MQTT: Memory" line was useful during the outbox/sync-publish
investigation but is spam for production. Gate the periodic logMemoryStatus()
call in the MQTT task loop behind MQTT_MEMORY_DEBUG (a dedicated diagnostics
flag, not enabled by plain MQTT_DEBUG or production builds) and stop the
heltec_v3 variant from force-enabling MQTT_MEMORY_DEBUG on its observer_mqtt
envs (now commented out to match heltec_v4). logMemoryStatus() itself is kept
intact for opt-in debugging.
Expose the same data on demand via a new `get mqtt.stats` CLI command backed by
MQTTBridge::formatMqttStatsReply(): free/max heap, queue depth, outbox total,
and per-slot publish ok/err counts (1-based, matching the msgs: line). Fits the
160-byte reply buffer at 6 slots; returns "(bridge not running)" when down.
Reverts merge ae045395 (feat/flex-ipv6, PR #25). Enabling IPv6 joins the
device into IPv6 multicast/ND processing; on multicast-heavy LANs (e.g.
with a Thread/Matter border router advertising a ULA prefix) inbound
bursts land in dynamic WiFi RX buffers in internal heap. Measured on a
Station G2 with 4 WSS brokers: min-free floor dropped 36 KB -> 18 KB,
largest free block pinned below the 16 KB publish threshold for minutes
at a time, 523 dropped publishes in 15 minutes. With IPv6 disabled the
floor and max-alloc recovered and publish skips stopped.
The feature only fed the wifi.status display line — no transport uses
IPv6 (all brokers connect over IPv4), so the fleet risk (network-
dependent degradation on unknown home LANs) buys nothing. Revisit after
the Arduino core 3.x / IDF 5.x move if IPv6 transport is ever needed;
the branch remains at feat/flex-ipv6.
Kept from the merge: the wifi.status uptime append now computes the
actual remaining space in the 160-byte reply buffer instead of assuming
a hardcoded 128, fixing a latent overflow of the snprintf bound.
Refactored the handling of observer-related settings by moving them from
NodePrefs to a new MQTTPrefs structure. This change centralizes MQTT,
WiFi, timezone, SNMP, and alert configurations, improving code organization
and maintainability. The new structure allows for better separation of
concerns and prepares the codebase for future enhancements.
Refactored the CommonCLI class to separate observer-related command
handling into CommonCLI_Observer.cpp. This change improves code
organization and maintainability by isolating MQTT, WiFi, and other
observer-specific commands from the main CLI logic.
