Alex BandClaude Opus 5.5 be6aeffe45 perf(store): drop the duplicate subpath count map (#2163)
## Summary

The subpath index keeps every contiguous run of 2-8 hops from every
stored transmission's path, in two maps:

- `spIndex`: key → count
- `spTxIndex`: key → transmissions containing that subpath, one entry
per occurrence

Both were always updated together (the only production callers were
`addTxToSubpathIndexFull` / `removeTxFromSubpathIndexFull`, which touch
both), so every count equalled `len(spTxIndex[key])`. The existing
`TestSubpathTxIndexPopulated` asserted exactly that. The index therefore
held its 1M+ keys twice.

This PR removes `spIndex`. The two analytics consumers read `len(txs)`,
and the add/remove helpers take only the transaction map. No API
response changes.

No existing upstream issue covers this; it came out of profiling a
production instance where garbage collection was 87% of CPU (30 s CPU
profile: `gcDrain` 39.9 s of 45.9 s sampled) with an 805 MB live heap
against a 1 GiB `GOMEMLIMIT`. That heap profile put 186 MB in this
index; on that instance's 7-day window there are 1.2M distinct subpath
keys (79% seen once) and 3.07M entries.

## Performance

### Go benchmark

`BenchmarkBuildSubpathIndex` builds the index for a synthetic,
production-shaped window: 41k transmissions with path lengths drawn from
the production hop-count histogram, and hops from random walks over a
400-node graph with 3-byte prefixes. That gives 1.48M keys, 85% seen
once (production: 1.2M, 79%). No real data is used. 10 runs each:

(`retained-B` is the live heap the index keeps after a forced GC: 250.1
MB → 196.8 MB.)

### Staging heap

Live heap after a forced GC (`/debug/pprof/heap?gc=1`), on a staging
host running a copy of a production database and its live MQTT feed,
attributed to the subpath index builder:

| | master | this PR |
|---|---|---|
| subpath index (`buildSubpathIndex`, cum) | 172.4 MB | 116.1 MB |
| packets in memory at the time | 27,521 | 24,086 |
| per packet | 6.27 KB | 4.82 KB (**-23%**) |

The two snapshots were taken minutes apart with different numbers of
packets loaded, hence the per-packet figure; it agrees with the
benchmark's -21%.

The same A/B replay used for the other PRs (30 minutes of real
production API traffic) showed no latency change (p50 10.3 ms vs 10.7
ms, p95 59.5 ms vs 52.9 ms, 0 errors). GC count and CPU were lower in
this run (44 → 28 collections, 13.0% → 9.6% CPU), but runs on this
shared host vary by that much on their own, so no claim is made from
them.

## Tests

- Red commit `ded359ff`: the fixture, `TestSubpathFixtureShape` (keeps
the fixture production-like: 60-95% singleton keys),
`BenchmarkBuildSubpathIndex`, and `TestSubpathIndexRetainedHeap`, which
allows at most 225 MB for the 41k fixture. It fails on `master` with
250.1 MB.
- Green commit `e399c561`: the change. The heap test passes at about 197
MB.
- `make test`: 16 of 16 modules pass; `go test -race` over the subpath,
eviction, path-hop and resolved-index tests passes.

Test changes in the green commit are mechanical, as required for a
structural change:

- struct literals stop setting `spIndex`; where a literal did not set
`spTxIndex` it now does, because appending to a nil map panics where the
old code skipped the transaction map when passed `nil`;
- count assertions read `len(spTxIndex[key])`;
- the old "spIndex and spTxIndex agree" check becomes "no key is kept
with an empty list", which is what keeps `len()` a correct count.

## Review notes

- Removal still takes out one occurrence per subpath occurrence and
deletes a key whose list becomes empty, so `len()` stays equal to the
old count through eviction.
- The store's memory estimate (`perSubpathEntryBytes`) is unchanged
here; accounting accuracy is a separate item.
- No new `map[string]interface{}`.

## SonarLint

SonarQube Community rules (the SonarLint engine) were run on the files
this PR touches, and only issues on lines it adds are listed.

- **Fixed** in `8af9582f`: S3776 (cognitive complexity 16 > 15) in the
test fixture. Path generation is split into graph and hop-count helpers;
the random draws stay in the same order, so the fixture is unchanged.

## Checked against the repo rules

- Rebased onto `master` (`673442cc`). Each red commit was re-run and
still fails on its assertions; each green commit passes (TDD.md).
- `make test`: all 16 modules pass. Frontend suites: all pass except
`test-issue-1956-release-routing.js`, which needs CI's `GITHUB_REF_NAME`
and fails the same way on `master` locally (#2160 addresses it).
- No private data: test fixtures and examples use the codes the existing
tests use (SJC/SFO/LAX, `#be`-style scopes).
- No new `map[string]interface{}`, no hard-coded colours. `git add` was
explicit, and there is one logical change per commit.

40f664c587 chore(#1859): gofmt sweep + gofmt/go vet CI gate (rebase of #1881) (#1941)
Rebase of #1881 by @SaarMesh-Bot onto current master. Their three
commits are preserved, two of them cherry-picked with authorship intact;
the sweep itself had to be regenerated. Opened as a new PR rather than
force-pushing their branch.

Closes #1881 once merged. Addresses parts 1 and 3 of #1859; part 2
landed as #1937.

## Why regenerated rather than merged

The sweep in #1881 was cut on 2026-09-02 07:13 and roughly forty PRs
landed after it, so it went `CONFLICTING/DIRTY`. Re-running `gofmt` on
current master is cheaper and less error-prone than resolving 72
conflicts that are all whitespace. The drift it fixes also grew in the
meantime: 66 files now, against 72 then, but spread differently.

## The three commits

1. **`style(#1859)`** — `gofmt -w` across the 14 modules. 66 files.
2. **`test(#1859)`** — @SaarMesh-Bot's fix for the one `go vet`
copylocks finding, `cmd/ingestor/coverage_boost_test.go`: the range
variable copied a `Config` embedding `sync.Once`. Cherry-picked
unchanged.
3. **`ci(#1859)`** — @SaarMesh-Bot's CI step that fails on gofmt drift
or vet findings, plus `.git-blame-ignore-revs`. Cherry-picked with one
change, noted in the commit message: the ignore file pointed at
`04bc80ee`, the sweep commit on their branch, which does not exist on
this base and would make `git blame --ignore-revs-file` error. Repointed
at `d3a02599`, the sweep here.

## Verification

The claim "formatting only" is checked twice rather than asserted:

- Every changed file is byte-identical to `gofmt(previous content)`. 0
of 66 deviate.
- With line comments and all whitespace stripped, 0 of 66 files differ,
so no code outside comments changed.

14 of the 66 also show doc-comment reflow. Since Go 1.19 `gofmt`
re-indents indented comment blocks to tabs and inserts a blank comment
line before them; the behavior matrix above `resolveHopWithContext` in
`cmd/ingestor/path_resolver.go` is a clear example. That is gofmt's own
output, not an edit, but it is worth naming because it makes the diff
look larger than "whitespace" suggests.

The gate was run locally exactly as the workflow runs it: `gofmt` clean,
and `go vet` clean in all 14 modules, including `cmd/ingestor` which is
what commit 2 fixes.

Suites: `cmd/server` ok (80.7s), `internal/packetpath` ok (2.3s),
`cmd/ingestor` passes except
`TestWriteStatsAtomic_SymlinkAtDestIsReplaced`, which fails identically
on bare master with "A required privilege is not held by the client"
(Windows symlink privilege on my host, not code).

## Sequencing

This should go last in the queue. The sweep touches 66 files, so merging
it before the remaining open Go PRs gives each of them a conflict about
nothing but formatting. After it lands the gate is active, and any PR
with drift fails CI until it runs `gofmt -w`.

Excluded from the sweep: the misnamed `Dockerfile.go`, which is a
Dockerfile that gofmt cannot parse (the workflow excludes it too), and
`docs/DEPLOYMENT.md`, which a case-insensitive filesystem surfaces as a
spurious modification against `docs/deployment.md` and is unrelated.

6528c7ba3e fix(#1854): move relay last_seen touch to the ingestor — server writes have been no-ops since mode=ro (#1855)
Fixes #1854. Refs #1598, #1611, #1845.

## The bug

`cmd/server/db.go:54` opens SQLite `mode=ro` (#1283/#1289).
`touchRelayLastSeen` → `TouchNodeLastSeen` issues `UPDATE nodes SET
last_seen` on that handle. It has failed on every call since, with the
error discarded at the call site:

```go
if err := s.db.TouchNodeLastSeen(pk, ts); err == nil {
        s.lastSeenTouched[pk] = now
}
```

`nodes.last_seen` has therefore tracked ADVERT arrivals only. Verified
on live.saarmesh.de (1388 nodes): 1362 have `last_seen` within one
minute of their own most recent ADVERT. Reproduced directly with the
server's DSN in #1854.

Secondary effect: `lastSeenTouched` is populated only in the success
branch, so the debounce never engaged — the server retried the failing
UPDATE for every resolved pubkey in every decode window.

## The fix

The writer moves to `cmd/ingestor`, which owns `nodes` per #1283/#1287
and since #1547 already resolves hop prefixes to full pubkeys for
`observations.resolved_path`. The touch hooks into that existing
resolution point, so there is no new IPC surface and no second resolver.
Only unambiguously resolved hops qualify — a 1-byte prefix collision
cannot keep a silent node alive.

I considered the `internal/mbcapqueue` snapshot handoff used for
#903/#1324 and did not need it: that pattern exists because the
capability computation lives in the server's analytics cycle. Path
resolution already happens in the ingestor, so a file handoff would add
a hop for nothing.

`Store.TouchRelayNodes`:

- monotonic guard in SQL (`last_seen IS NULL OR last_seen < ?`) —
out-of-order ingest never rewinds
- 5-minute debounce keyed on `rxTime`, matching the interval the server
intended
- UPDATE only — unknown pubkeys never create rows
- unparsable `rxTime` is a no-op rather than writing garbage into the
node directory
- `Stats.RelayTouches` for `/api/perf` visibility
- debounce records the *attempt*, not the row match, so an unknown
pubkey is not retried per observation

## Server-side removal

`touchRelayLastSeen`, `DB.TouchNodeLastSeen`, the `lastSeenTouched` map
and the now-unused `allResolvedPKs` decode-window map are deleted.
`readonly_invariant_test.go` gains `UPDATE\s+nodes\s+SET\s+last_seen`.

`cmd/server/touch_last_seen_test.go` and two tests in
`resolved_index_test.go` go with it. Worth stating why they were green
for months: they build their `PacketStore` on `setupTestDB`, which opens
read-write. The production constraint is the one thing they did not
reproduce, which is why the added invariant regex — not a replacement
unit test — is the right guard here.

## Tests

Five tests in `cmd/ingestor/relay_touch_test.go`, committed red first
(573bbde3) with a stubbed `TouchRelayNodes` so the suite compiles and
reds on assertions:

```
--- FAIL: TestTouchRelayNodes_AdvancesLastSeen
    last_seen = "2026-07-01T00:00:00Z", want "2026-07-10T12:00:00Z"
    RelayTouches = 0, want 1
--- FAIL: TestTouchRelayNodes_Debounces
    RelayTouches = 0, want 1 (second touch should be debounced)
```

Coverage: `AdvancesLastSeen` (core regression), `NeverGoesBackwards`
(monotonic), `Debounces` (write amplification on the hot path),
`IgnoresEmptyAndUnknown` (unresolved hops must not create rows),
`MalformedTimestamp`.

`cmd/ingestor`: full suite green, 100.7s.

`cmd/server`: green for the invariant and the affected packages, but the
suite is order-dependent on master today. Unmodified `upstream/master`
produced 8 failures on this machine (`TestHandleNodePaths_*`,
`TestHandleAnalytics*`, `TestComputeAnalyticsDistanceLockHoldDuration`);
this branch produced 5, and the set shifts between runs. All pass in
isolation. Untouched by this change — flagging rather than papering
over, and happy to open a separate issue if that is not already known.

## Impact on the open threads

This is the backend half of #1598. The frontend work there keys on relay
recency; that signal was never being written, so the two changes are
complementary rather than alternatives. It also removes the eviction
problem I raised in #1845 without touching `MoveStaleNodes`: once
`last_seen` reflects relay activity, the existing `last_seen < cutoff`
predicate stops evicting nodes that are carrying traffic.

Not addressed here: the duplicate-row behaviour between `nodes` and
`inactive_nodes` (609 keys in both on my deployment), which is an
independent defect and wants its own change.

## Verification offer

I run a 1100-repeater MeshCore deployment and can run this against
production traffic and report `RelayTouches` plus the resulting
`last_seen` distribution before/after, if that is useful for review.

6a32ec2b2d fix(#1729): preserve firmware-default Public channel (0x11) in analytics (#1817)
## Fixes #1729

The firmware-default **Public** channel (channel-hash byte `0x11` = 17)
was rendered as an opaque **"Encrypted (0x11)"** row at the bottom of
the analytics Channels tab, despite the key being well-known and
builtin.

  ## Root cause

`computeAnalyticsChannels` applied the #978 rainbow-table validation
(`SHA256(SHA256("#name")[:16])[0]`, the **hashtag** hash scheme) to
every decoded channel name. The Public channel is a **PSK** channel
whose hash byte is key-derived (`SHA256(key)[0]` = 17), not
hashtag-derived (`186` for `#Public`). So the ingestor-decoded name
`"Public"` failed the hashtag check and was discarded, the row forced to
`encrypted=true, name="ch17"`.

  ## Fix

Trust the ingestor's `decryptionStatus`. The ingestor already persists
`decryptionStatus:"decrypted"` when it decoded a packet with a real key
(PSK), and `"no_key"` / `"decryption_failed"` otherwise. When the packet
is `decrypted`, skip the hashtag hash check and keep the name — it came
from a key-based decryption, not a
rainbow-table lookup. The #978 mismatch rejection still applies to
non-decrypted packets, so rainbow-table collisions are still caught.

Frontend needs no change: `encrypted=false, name="Public"` lands in the
"Network" group (top), not "Encrypted".

  ## Tests

- `makeGrpTx` gains `makeGrpTxWithStatus` companion to set
`decryptionStatus`.
- `TestComputeAnalyticsChannels_PublicChannelPreserved`: hash 17 /
"Public" / `decrypted` → name stays `"Public"`, `encrypted=false`.
- `TestComputeAnalyticsChannels_UndecryptedNameStillValidated`: a
non-`decrypted` name failing the hashtag check is still downgraded to
`ch17` (#978 regression guard).

  All channel-analytics tests pass; `go build ./...` clean.

317b59ab10 feat: area-based visual node filter — attribute packets by transmitter GPS (#804) (#839)
## Summary

- Adds configurable GPS polygon areas to `config.json`; nodes are
attributed to an area if their last-known position falls inside the
polygon
- New `Area: …` dropdown filter (matching the existing region filter
style) appears on all analytics, nodes, packets, map, and live screens
when areas are configured
- Backend resolves area membership with a 30s TTL cache; area filter
bypasses the 500-node cap on `/api/bulk-health` so all area nodes are
always returned
- Includes a polygon builder tool (`/area-map.html`) for drawing and
exporting area boundaries

## Changes

**Backend**
- `AreaEntry` type + `Areas` config field
- `GetNodePubkeysInArea` DB query + `resolveAreaNodes` (30s TTL,
`areaNodeMu` RWMutex)
- `PacketQuery.Area` + `filterPackets` polygon check
- `?area=` param propagated through all analytics, topology,
clock-health, and bulk-health routes
- `/api/config/areas` endpoint

**Frontend**
- `area-filter.js`: single-select dropdown, persists to localStorage,
cleans up stale keys on load
- Wired into analytics, nodes, packets, channels, map, and live pages
- Live map clears node markers on area change

**Docs & tools**
- `docs/user-guide/area-filter.md` — configuration and usage guide
- `docs/api-spec.md` — updated with new endpoint and `?area=` param
table
- `tools/area-map.html` — polygon builder for defining area boundaries
- Demo areas added to `config.example.json`

## Test plan

- [x] No areas configured → filter dropdown does not appear on any page
- [x] Areas configured → dropdown appears, "All" selected by default
- [x] Selecting an area filters nodes/packets/topology/map correctly
- [x] Selecting "All" restores unfiltered view
- [x] Selection persists across page reloads (localStorage)
- [x] Stale localStorage key (area removed from config) is cleared on
load
- [x] `/api/bulk-health?area=X` returns all nodes in area (no 500-node
cap)
- [x] `/api/config/areas` returns correct list

a56ee5c4fe feat(analytics): selectable timeframes via ?window/?from/?to (#842) (#1018)
## Summary
Selectable analytics timeframes (#842). Adds backend support for
`?window=1h|24h|7d|30d` and `?from=&to=` on the three main analytics
endpoints (`/api/analytics/rf`, `/api/analytics/topology`,
`/api/analytics/channels`), and a time-window picker in the Analytics
page UI that drives them. Default behavior with no query params is
unchanged.

## TDD trail
- Red: `bbab04d` — adds `TimeWindow` + `ParseTimeWindow` stub and tests;
tests fail on assertions because the stub returns the zero window.
- Green: `75d27f9` — implements `ParseTimeWindow`, threads `TimeWindow`
through `compute*` loops + caches, wires HTTP handlers, adds frontend
picker + E2E.

## Backend changes
- `cmd/server/time_window.go` — full `ParseTimeWindow` (`?window=`
aliases + `?from=/&to=` RFC3339 absolute range; invalid input → zero
window for backwards compatibility).
- `cmd/server/store.go` — new
`GetAnalytics{RF,Topology,Channels}WithWindow` wrappers; `compute*`
loops skip transmissions whose `FirstSeen` (or per-obs `Timestamp` for
the region+observer slice) falls outside the window. Cache key composes
`region|window` so different windows do not poison each other.
- `cmd/server/routes.go` — handlers call `ParseTimeWindow(r)` and
dispatch to the `*WithWindow` methods.

## Frontend changes
- `public/analytics.js` — new `<select id="analyticsTimeWindow">`
rendered under the region filter (All / 1h / 24h / 7d / 30d). Selecting
an option triggers `loadAnalytics()` which appends `&window=…` to every
analytics fetch.

## Tests
- `cmd/server/time_window_test.go` — covers all aliases, absolute range,
no-params backwards compatibility, `Includes()` bounds, and `CacheKey()`
distinctness.
- `cmd/server/topology_dedup_test.go`,
`cmd/server/channel_analytics_test.go` — updated callers to pass
`TimeWindow{}`.

## E2E (rule 18)
`test-e2e-playwright.js:592-611` — opens `/#/analytics`, asserts the
picker is rendered with a `24h` option, then asserts that selecting
`24h` triggers a network request to `/api/analytics/rf?…window=24h`.

## Backwards compatibility
No params → zero `TimeWindow` → original code paths (no filter,
region-only cache key). Verified by
`TestParseTimeWindow_NoParams_BackwardsCompatible` and by the existing
analytics tests still passing unchanged on `_wt-fix-842`.

Kpa-clawbotandyou fc57433f27 fix(analytics): merge channel buckets by hash byte; reject rainbow-table mismatches (closes #978) (#980)
## Summary

Closes #978 — analytics channels duplicated by encrypted/decrypted split
+ rainbow-table collisions.

## Root cause

Two distinct bugs in `computeAnalyticsChannels` (`cmd/server/store.go`):

1. **Encrypted/decrypted split**: The grouping key included the decoded
channel name (`hash + "_" + channel`), so packets from observers that
could decrypt a channel created a separate bucket from packets where
decryption failed. Same physical channel, two entries.

2. **Rainbow-table collisions**: Some observers' lookup tables map hash
bytes to wrong channel names. E.g., hash `72` incorrectly claimed to be
`#wardriving` (real hash is `129`). This created ghost 1-message
entries.

## Fix

1. **Always group by hash byte alone** (drop `_channel` suffix from
`chKey`). When any packet decrypts successfully, upgrade the bucket's
display name from placeholder (`chN`) to the real name
(first-decrypter-wins for stability).

2. **Validate channel names** against the firmware hash invariant:
`SHA256(SHA256("#name")[:16])[0] == channelHash`. Mismatches are treated
as encrypted (placeholder name, no trust in decoded channel). Guard is
in the analytics handler (not the ingestor) to avoid breaking other
surfaces that use the decoded field for display.

## Verification (e2e-fixture.db)

| Metric | BEFORE | AFTER |
|--------|--------|-------|
| Total channels | 22 | 19 |
| Duplicate hash bytes | 3 (hashes 217, 202, 17) | 0 |

## Tests added

- `TestComputeAnalyticsChannels_MergesEncryptedAndDecrypted` — same
hash, mixed encrypted/decrypted → ONE bucket
- `TestComputeAnalyticsChannels_RejectsRainbowTableMismatch` — hash 72
claimed as `#wardriving` (real=129) → rejected, stays `ch72`
- `TestChannelNameMatchesHash` — unit test for hash validation helper
- `TestIsPlaceholderName` — unit test for placeholder detection

Anti-tautology gate: both main tests fail when their respective fix
lines are reverted.
