Erik JohnstonandClaude Fable 5 b4deb24be6 Use a CPU-time budget for test_lock_contention to fix postgres flakiness (#19929)
`test_lock_contention` is a performance-regression canary (#16840): the
pathological behaviour it guards against spent ~30s spinning the CPU, vs
~0.5s when healthy. The 5s wall-clock alarm it used was calibrated on
SQLite, but against PostgreSQL a healthy run already takes 3-4s of
wall-clock time (500 sequential acquire/release cycles, each a real
database round-trip), so any CI load pushed it over the limit.

Add a `cpu_time` mode to `tests/utils.py`'s test_timeout, implemented
with
[`setitimer(ITIMER_PROF)`](https://docs.python.org/3/library/signal.html#signal.setitimer),
which budgets process CPU time instead of wall-clock time. Time spent
blocked on the database or lost to a loaded CI runner no longer counts,
while a regression to CPU-spinning still trips the alarm mid-spin. A
healthy run costs <1s of CPU on either database engine; the budget is
10s.

This also subsumes the RISC-V wall-clock carve-out from #18430, which is
removed.

Eric Eastwood b8bd35105f Update WorkerLock tests to better stress the WORKER_LOCK_MAX_RETRY_INTERVAL (#19772)
There is no behavioral change, only a change to the tests. See

for an explanation of why the tests needed changing (and diff comments).

Jason LittleandEric Eastwood 3f58bc50df fix: Cap WorkerLock timeout intervals to 60 seconds (#19394)
Fixes the symptoms of https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/19315
/ https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/19588 but not the
underlying reason causing the number to grow so large in the first
place.

Copied from the original pull request on [Famedly's Synapse
repo](https://github.com/famedly/synapse/pull/221) (with some edits):

Basing the time interval around a 5 seconds leaves a big window of
waiting especially as this window is doubled each retry, when another
worker could be making progress but can not.

Right now, the retry interval in seconds looks like `[0.2, 5, 10, 20,
40, 80, 160, 320, (continues to double)]` after which logging should
start about excessive times and (relatively quickly) end up with an
extremely large retry interval with an unrealistic expectation past the
heat death of the universe. 1 year in seconds = 31,536,000.

With this change, retry intervals in seconds should look more like:

Further suggested work in this area could be to define the cap, the
retry interval starting point and the multiplier depending on how
frequently this lock should be checked. See data below for reasons why.
Increasing the jitter range may also be a good idea

Eric Eastwood 5a9ca1e3d9 Introduce Clock.call_when_running(...) to include logcontext by default (#18944)
Introduce `Clock.call_when_running(...)` to wrap startup code in a
logcontext, ensuring we can identify which server generated the logs.

Background:

>  Ideally, nothing from the Synapse homeserver would be logged against the `sentinel` 
>  logcontext as we want to know which server the logs came from. In practice, this is not 
>  always the case yet especially outside of request handling. 
>   
>  Global things outside of Synapse (e.g. Twisted reactor code) should run in the 
>  `sentinel` logcontext. It's only when it calls into application code that a logcontext 
>  gets activated. This means the reactor should be started in the `sentinel` logcontext, 
>  and any time an awaitable yields control back to the reactor, it should reset the 
>  logcontext to be the `sentinel` logcontext. This is important to avoid leaking the 
>  current logcontext to the reactor (which would then get picked up and associated with 
>  the next thing the reactor does).

Also adds a lint to prefer `Clock.call_when_running(...)` over

Ruff, as well as logging exception stack traces in a few places where it
makes sense

Practically, this means prefer placeholders (`%s`) over f-strings for
logging.

This is because placeholders are passed as args to loggers, so they can
do special handling of them.
For example, Sentry will record the args separately in their logging
integration:

One theoretical small perf benefit is that log levels that aren't
enabled won't get formatted, so it doesn't unnecessarily create

gui-yue 07468a0f1c Increase timeout for test_lock_contention on RISC-V (#18430)
This PR addresses a test failure for
`tests.handlers.test_worker_lock.WorkerLockTestCase.test_lock_contention`
which consistently times out on the RISC-V (specifically `riscv64`)
architecture.

The test simulates high lock contention and has a default timeout of 5
seconds, which seems sufficient for architectures like x86_64 but proves
too short for current RISC-V hardware/environment performance
characteristics, leading to spurious `tests.utils.TestTimeout` failures.

This fix introduces architecture detection using `platform.machine()`.
If a RISC-V architecture is detected:
* The timeout for this specific test is increased (e.g., to 15 seconds
).

The original, stricter timeout (5 seconds) and lock count (500) are
maintained for all other architectures to avoid masking potential
performance regressions elsewhere.

This change has been tested locally on RISC-V, where the test now passes
reliably, and on x86_64, where it continues to pass with the original
constraints.

Mathieu Velten cb562d73aa Improve lock performance when a lot of locks are waiting (#16840)
When a lot of locks are waiting for a single lock, notifying all locks
independently with `call_later` on each release is really costly and
incurs some kind of async contention, where the CPU is spinning a lot
for not much.

The included test is taking around 30s before the change, and 0.5s
after.

It was found following failing tests with

Erik Johnston 23740eaa3d Correctly mention previous copyright (#16820)

headers accidentally got rid of some of the existing copyright lines.
