agessaman f339beb22e docs: refresh observer docs and document ota commands
Add ota check/update/branch, display, and diagnostic commands to the
observer guide; condense MQTT_IMPLEMENTATION.md and ALERTS.md; fix the
nonexistent 'set bridge off' instruction; mark the T-LoRa observer envs
parked; update the SNMP build-target list; move local-testing notes to
MQTT_INTERNALS.md; drop MEMORY_MONITORING.md (its script never existed).

Adam Gessaman 905b0af2e6 feat(variants): add Heltec V2 MQTT observer envs
Heltec_v2_repeater_observer_mqtt and Heltec_v2_room_server_observer_mqtt,
modelled on the Heltec V3 observer envs. The V2 is a classic ESP32 without
PSRAM, so like the T-LoRa observer it is documented as one active WSS broker
and leaves MQTT_NEIGHBORS_WITHOUT_PSRAM off. Its 8 MB flash and the board's
default_8MB.csv layout fit the image (48% of the app slot), so no partition
change or erase is needed.

agessaman e53755a5a9 feat(mqtt): add opt-in advert signature check before publishing
Received packets are uploaded before Mesh::onRecvPacket validates them, so
an advert corrupted over the air that still passes the LoRa CRC is published
with a mangled name or location. `set mqtt.advert.verify on` verifies each
received advert's Ed25519 signature (same message layout as Mesh.cpp,
including the 32-byte app-data clamp) and skips publishing failures.

Defaults off so collectors keep seeing RF corruption on the mesh. Dropped
adverts are counted as badsig= in `get mqtt.stats`. Exposed in the web
config Publishing card and persisted as mqtt.advert_verify in prefs JSON.

agessaman a24dade1c0 fix(network): snapshot and restore every lwIP DNS slot
DHCP can fill all DNS_MAX_SERVERS (3) slots, but only two were saved and restored, so a third server from one medium survived a switch to the other. link.dns now drops trailing empty slots to keep remote replies under 160 bytes.

agessaman 274997e9ae feat(cli): add get link.dns for resolver, gateway and lease DNS
Shows lwIP's live global DNS server list next to the DNS each medium's DHCP lease installed, so a node that is linked but failing to resolve can be diagnosed remotely.

MarekWoandClaude Opus 5 0dca31f5c3 Add marwoj MQTT broker preset
Adds a built-in preset for the Polish MeshCore community broker at
mqtt.marwoj.net: MQTT over TLS on port 8883, username/password auth
with credentials embedded in firmware, and the standard MeshCore topic
layout. The Let's Encrypt chain anchors at the existing ISRG_ROOT_X1
constant, so no new CA certificate is needed.

agessaman 6e7f3cdb52 fix(network): bound link transitions and restore each medium's DNS
Two defects found by an adversarial review of the merge.

A link transition no longer stops a slot whose connect attempt is in flight.
Stopping one means esp_mqtt_client_stop(), which waits on the SDK's API mutex
and its task's stopped event with no bound; the client task notices only when
it returns from whatever transport call it is in. During teardown the bridge's
StopUnproven timeout contains that, but during a transition nothing does, so a
routine WiFi flap could freeze the sole MQTT worker for far longer than the 2 s
this path advertises, with the bridge's own stop handshake queued behind it.
The attempt is left to resolve instead: unlike a reconfigure, a transition
changes neither endpoint nor credentials, so an attempt that completes is
credited to the broker it actually reached and drops with the old route.

Failing back to Ethernet left the node using the WiFi network's DNS server.
lwIP keeps one global server list and IDF 4.4 has no per-interface retention,
so the medium that leased last owns DNS for every socket. Each link now
remembers the resolver its own DHCP lease installed and puts it back when it is
selected again; a medium that never held a lease leaves the current resolver
alone. Where the two networks are on different subnets this was a silent
outage: the link read as connected while every broker and NTP hostname failed
to resolve, until Ethernet's own DHCP renewal happened to fix it.

agessaman 25f26c3058 Merge fix/mqtt-review-2026-09-09 into feat/abstract-networking
#54 lands first, so the network abstraction is reworked on top of the
per-slot client ownership model instead of alongside it.

Two resolutions are semantic, not textual:

- Link-transition teardown goes through the ownership API. It called
softDisconnect() on every started client, which bypassed client_state and
ignored the typed result. A slot that is still Starting now gets a real
stop: softDisconnect() returns immediately on a client that is not yet
connected, so its attempt would otherwise complete against the old route and
deliver a CONNECTED event indistinguishable from the new one's (F04). On a
medium switch the old route can still be briefly usable, so that is not
hypothetical. A connected client keeps the cheap bounded path, and a
  quarantined one is left alone.

- NetworkLink::applyPowerPrefs() adopts WifiPowerSavePolicy. Its local
`2 ? MAX : NONE` mapping would have reintroduced F11 and read the new stored
value 3 (explicit `min`) as none. It also applies the setting when the link
starts already associated, which is the case the bridge used to cover.

The NTP probe from #54 keeps its validation and its one-attempt-per-server
bound, but resolves and gates on the selected link rather than on WiFi, so it
works on an Ethernet-preferred node.

agessaman f50a6a3940 fix(mqtt): resume after a late stop ack; bound the hourly NTP refresh
- A stop that timed out into StopUnproven refused begin(), and only a
later begin() honoured the task's late acknowledgement. Nothing called
it, so restartBridge() (any `set mqtt...` restart) or an aborted OTA left
the observer offline for the rest of the boot. MyMesh now records that a
start was refused and restarts the bridge once stopAcknowledgedLate()
reports the ack. The OTA-abort alert no longer claims "bridge resumed"
  when the restart was refused.
- refreshNTP() now runs the validated probe with one attempt per server.
With two attempts and a 1 s pause it blocked the MQTT task ~18 s every
hour on networks that drop UDP/123, where the old async SNTP cost
nothing. Loop comment and docs updated to match.

agessaman 7aed59075b fix(network): bound link-transition teardown and gate Ethernet restarts
- Link down/switch edges now softDisconnect() every started slot instead
of disconnect(). The full stop could wait forever for a DISCONNECTED
event on the Core 0 MQTT task, and it destroyed and recreated every
slot's esp-mqtt task on each Wi-Fi drop, where the bridge previously
stopped none (measured: 62 s deauth, five slots, zero stops).
softDisconnect() is bounded and keeps the task; reconnectSlotClient()
then calls reconnect() on the new route. Rename the transition action
  to disconnect_started_slots to match.
- Ethernet no-IP recovery and init retries rebuild the CH390 netif, so
they now run inside the route-switch mutation gate. An OTA/WebConfig
lock taken after maintain() samples the lock count can no longer have
the interface torn down underneath it.

agessaman 62ad163f28 feat(thinknode-m7): make the MQTT observer envs Ethernet-preferred
Fold the CH390 overlay and NETWORK_PREFER_ETHERNET into
ThinkNode_M7_{repeater,room_server}_observer_mqtt and drop the separate
*_observer_mqtt_ethernet twins. The env names (and so the OTA manifests)
are unchanged, so existing M7 observers OTA into the Ethernet-preferred
image; without a cable they select stored Wi-Fi after a brief boot probe.

agessaman 4c683b13b3 fix(network): pre-merge review fixes
- Guard the boot-time link bootstrap to observer ESP32 builds. It ran
unconditionally in MyMesh::begin(), breaking every non-observer
  repeater/room server build (ESP32 and nRF52).
- Rename NetworkInterface -> NetworkLink (class, accessor, files).
Arduino-ESP32 3.x ships its own NetworkInterface class and header,
  which broke the ESP32-C6 builds. Drop WiFi.setAutoConnect(), a no-op
on 2.x and removed in 3.x.
- Refresh stored Wi-Fi credentials every bridge tick so the STA
  reconnect loop picks up `set wifi.ssid` / `set wifi.pwd` without a
reboot, as the bridge did before the link moved out of it. Skip
reconnects while the SSID is empty.
- Restore the "WiFi connected: <ip>" / "WiFi disconnected: reason N"
debug lines the bridge used to print.
- Alert on Ethernet only once it has held a lease this boot or when no
Wi-Fi is configured; Wi-Fi-only installs of an Ethernet-preferred
image keep Wi-Fi alerts instead of reporting "Ethernet down".
- Record wifi.setup_complete only for Ethernet LAN onboarding, so
Wi-Fi builds keep the SSID-based first-boot portal rule.
- Use seq_cst for the route-switch lock/mutation flag handshake.
- Docs: SNMP RSSI sentinel is -127; describe link-return vs medium-switch
reconnect behavior accurately; note runtime credential pickup.
- Test: unknown keys inside a known /mqtt.json group are ignored, which
  keeps wifi.setup_complete downgrade-safe.

agessaman 4c7b6450d7 fix(mqtt): validate NTP replies before trusting them
NTPClient::forceUpdate() treated any non-empty datagram arriving on its fixed
local port 1337 as a time response: it ignored the read length, the version,
the mode, the stratum, the leap indicator and any request/response correlation,
then handed the bytes at offset 40 to the bridge. The bridge only checked that
the derived epoch was at least 2026-01-01 before calling settimeofday() and
writing the RTC. A host probe against the installed library source accepted a
one-byte non-NTP datagram and produced epoch 2085978496. Anyone able to land a
UDP datagram during a query window could set a bogus clock, which then feeds JWT
issuance, certificate validity and packet timestamps.

Replace that path with probeNtpServer(): one exchange per server on a fresh
ephemeral socket, closed again on every exit. A reply is accepted only if it is
a full 48 bytes, from the address and port queried, NTPv3/v4 mode 4, from a
synchronised server (no leap alarm, stratum 1-15), echoing the random transmit
timestamp of the request, with an epoch inside a plausible range. Rejected
datagrams leave the clock alone and do not end the wait, so an early bogus
packet cannot pre-empt the real answer. Era-1 (post-2036) timestamps convert
forward instead of wrapping into 1900.

The diagnostic now runs the same validated probe, so `get mqtt.ntp.diag`
answers the question it is asked — would this server be trusted? — instead of
reporting a datagram nothing checked. It also no longer leaves its UDP socket
open after the probe, and each server's per-probe result carries the reason it
failed ("DNS failed", "unsolicited reply", "server unsynced", ...). The
diagnostic still blocks its caller; making it asynchronous is a separate change.

The acceptance rules live in NtpValidation.h (pure, host-tested), including the
review's one-byte-datagram reproduction.

agessaman a728d7542c fix(mqtt): honour mqtt.status off for the on-connect status message
Only the periodic status path consulted the setting. The connect callback armed
a status publish unconditionally and publishStatusToSlot() never checked it, so
every boot and every reconnect published a status message — including the
metadata an operator turned the setting off to suppress. The documented contract
is "Enable/disable status messages".

Read the toggle live from prefs at publish time, matching the periodic path, and
also skip a slot the operator has disabled: teardown only stops a client that
reports connected, so a slot switched off mid-connect can still complete its
handshake and arm this publish.

agessaman d8d72b7833 feat(station-g3): add second RF slot (r2) build targets
The motherboard has two RF daughterboard slots on separate GPIOs, mirrored by
its "LNA P" / "LNA S" jumpers, but the variant only ever pinned slot 1.

The shared configuration moves into [Station_G3_ESP32_common], with the SPI and
LNA lines split into per-slot sections. [Station_G3_ESP32] (slot 1) and
[Station_G3_ESP32_r2] (slot 2) each compose common + their own pins, so neither
set of -D flags has to shadow the other on the compile line - appending an
override would work only by last-wins, and esp32_base's -w hides the resulting
redefinition warning. Every pre-existing env keeps its name and resolves to
byte-identical options; verified by diffing pio project config --json-output.

PA PL1 is one board-level jumper shared by both slots, so P_PA1_EN stays in the
common section along with the TX power calibration.

Adds r2 twins of the repeater, room server and both observer envs, each an exact
mirror of its slot-1 sibling apart from the base it extends.

Slot 2 pins come from on-hardware testing in agessaman/MeshCore#49 and are not
documented publicly; the vendor wiki serves no content to fetchers and Meshtastic
implements slot 1 only.

Known limitation, unchanged from that PR: GPIO 42 and 43 fall outside the
ESP32-S3 RTC GPIO range (0-21), so the rtc_gpio_hold_en() calls in
ESP32Board::enterDeepSleep() and StationG3Board::powerOff() return
ESP_ERR_INVALID_ARG on slot 2 and the NSS and LNA pins are not latched through
deep sleep. Fixing it means gpio_hold_en() plus gpio_deep_sleep_hold_en() in
shared code.

agessaman a3a0a94dc4 feat(mqtt-neighbors): support non-PSRAM observer boards
Neighbors publication was gated on BOARD_HAS_PSRAM. Removing that gate alone
was not enough: the feature built but was inert without PSRAM, because three
allocation sites asked for MALLOC_CAP_SPIRAM (which returns null with no
PSRAM), the bridge's persistent buffer was allocated inside a BOARD_HAS_PSRAM
block, and neighborDiscoverReady() rejected every pass at runtime on
psramFound(). The entry table also did not fit: finishNeighborDiscover put
pubkey_hex[50][65] plus entries[50] on the stack, a 4752-byte frame against
the mesh loop task's 8 KB.

- Gate on MAX_NEIGHBOURS plus PSRAM or an explicit per-variant
  MQTT_NEIGHBORS_WITHOUT_PSRAM opt-in.
- Move the entry table and its hex strings into one heap block sized to the
pass; the frame drops from 4752 to 304 bytes.
- Prefer PSRAM and fall back to internal DRAM in the mesh-side allocations
and the ArduinoJson pool; hoist the bridge's persistent buffer out of the
BOARD_HAS_PSRAM block (psram_malloc already falls back).
- Keep the runtime psramFound() check only where the buffers are sized for
PSRAM, so a board whose PSRAM failed to init still refuses.
- Size for internal DRAM without PSRAM: 4 KB text buffer and 20 entries per
publish, keeping the pool to a single block and the peak near 13 KB rather
than ~35 KB. Oversized tables truncate and report total_neighbors as before.

Enabled on the ESP32-S3 observer envs (Heltec V3/WSL3, RAK3112, Heltec
Tracker v1.1/v2). Left off for the classic ESP32 T-LoRa V2.1-1.6, which is
already limited to one active TLS slot.

Costs ~7.4 KB static DRAM on repeaters and ~9.6 KB on room servers. The
prefs layout is unchanged, so this is neutral for existing devices.

agessaman 37444be7b5 feat(thinknode-m7): add repeater and room server observer variants
Adds ThinkNode_M7_repeater_observer_mqtt and
ThinkNode_M7_room_server_observer_mqtt, following the Station G3 observer
overlay: adafruit-full cert bundle, MQTT bridge + SNMP, pinned observer
lib_deps, and the quieter default logging profile.

WiFi-only for now. The M7 has an onboard CH390 Ethernet controller (used by
ThinkNode_M7_companion_radio_ethernet, and an lwIP netif so the MQTT data path
would work over it), but the bridge's link management is bound to the WiFi
station API, so Ethernet cannot carry MQTT yet.

The board has PSRAM, so MAX_NEIGHBOURS=50 enables WITH_MQTT_NEIGHBORS —
verified present in both images. Builds use 46.5% of the 3.19 MB app slot at
13.7% RAM, and build.sh emits the full artifact set (.bin, -merged.bin,
.partsig). The partition table is inherited from [ThinkNode_M7] unchanged, so
no merged first flash is needed; its signature is byte-identical to the T-Beam
Supreme observer builds (both default_8MB.csv).

Also fixes two pre-existing build failures on this board:

- [ThinkNode_M7] re-added a blanket helpers/*.cpp after arduino_base excludes
the MQTT-only sources, so every M7 env failed on a missing Timezone.h. The
glob was otherwise fully redundant with the base, so it is dropped rather
  than re-excluding the two files.
- ThinkNode_M7_companion_radio_ethernet sets DISPLAY_CLASS=NullDisplayDriver
but never compiled NullDisplayDriver.cpp, which defines UIColor::window_bkg,
so it failed at link. The ble and wifi envs both already list it.

All nine M7 envs now build. Observer env discovery picks up both new envs, and
the ArduinoJson pin check covers both new sections.

agessaman 5828a3c563 fix(mqtt-neighbors): report unusable heard ages as null
A neighbour heard before the clock is set carries the firmware's unset-clock
default (1715770351, 15 May 2024). Subtracting that from an NTP-synced clock
published ages of ~806 days for neighbours that had just answered a live scope
query, and a backwards clock step reported 0, i.e. "heard just now".

- finishNeighborDiscover() reports the age as unknown ("heard_secs_ago": null)
when the stored stamp and the current clock come from different epochs, or
when the clock has stepped backwards
- handleNeighborDiscoverResponse() re-stamps heard_timestamp on a zero-hop scope
reply, in both the snapshot and the live table, so entries heal once per
discovery cycle instead of waiting for the neighbour's next advert
- publish ordering places usable ages ahead of unknown ones so a poisoned stamp
cannot displace fresh entries when the JSON buffer truncates
- document the null case, and the always-present total_neighbors /
queried_neighbors / truncated fields the payload sample omitted
- add UPSTREAM_BUGS.md, tracking the monotonic-uptime fix to propose upstream
plus the unclamped subtraction in the companion and CLI readouts

Containment only: upstream still stamps neighbours from the wall clock at
packet-reception time, which on a cold boot always precedes NTP.

agessaman fe3b5f8a0f feat(station-g3): add repeater and room server observer variants
Adds Station_G3_ESP32_repeater_observer_mqtt and
Station_G3_ESP32_room_server_observer_mqtt, mirroring the known-good
Station G2 observer envs. The two boards are the same family — ESP32-S3,
qio_opi, PSRAM, 16 MB flash, SH1106 display — so the overlay ports across
unchanged: default_16MB.csv partitions, adafruit-full cert bundle,
MQTT bridge + SNMP, and the same lib_deps pinning.

Verified the G3 partition signature is byte-identical to the G2 observer's,
so the OTA partition-compatibility gate treats them the same. Both envs
build clean (1.67 MB of the 6.25 MB app slot, 28% RAM) and produce the full
CI artifact set via build.sh: .bin, -merged.bin and .partsig. Observer env
discovery now finds 32 envs (was 30) and the ArduinoJson pin check covers
both new sections.

Docs: added the G3 build commands and the two partition-table rows to
MQTT_IMPLEMENTATION.md.

agessaman dd7d13497b docs: trim MQTT guide redundancy and split out internals
Port the observer doc cleanup from observer-firmware (4beb5472) onto dev,
keeping dev-specific content intact.

- move internal mechanics into MQTT_INTERNALS.md: deferred construction,
runtime slot memory, backoff/circuit breaker, message building, command
namespacing, and the legacy prefs key mapping
- drop the duplicated First-Time Setup, Command Architecture, and SNMP
Monitoring sections, folding their unique steps into Quick Start
- condense the partition/NVS prose and merge the five custom-broker
examples into one Custom Brokers section
- promote the preset list to a top-level Broker Presets section with an
Extra setup column, and document the presets the table was missing:
meshcore-fi, corecomms, mesh-chaun14, wcmesh, and meshtexas
- fix the coloradomesh port (443, not 1883)
- point flasher and changelog links at observer.gessaman.com
- restore the nbr: status field, which the code still emits, and correct
the neighbors topic to QoS 0 retained per allow_retain

Dev-specific content is preserved as-is: per-slot packet filters, the Web
Configuration Portal, local testing without hardware, MeshRank's raw
exclusion, and neighbors default_scope.

agessaman 616fe96d1e feat(mqtt): publish all message types except raw to MeshRank
MeshRank slots previously took packets only. The broker tolerates status and
neighbors (and its maintainer intends to look at using the neighbors data), so
those now publish under meshrank/uplink/{token}/{device}/{type}, using the same
type suffixes as the MeshCore layout. Raw stays excluded: it is the
highest-volume topic and the broker does not consume it, so `set mqtt.raw on`
has no effect on a MeshRank slot.

All MeshRank gating funnels through the topic router, so relaxing that single
guard was sufficient - publishStatusToSlot, publishStatus, publishRaw,
publishNeighbors, and eligiblePacketSlots already skip slots that cannot form a
topic. A per-slot token is still required. Because eligiblePacketSlots resolves
topic support before serialising, raw JSON is never built for a MeshRank slot
rather than built and discarded.

observer-firmware sends raw to MeshRank; this supersedes that decision, so raw
must stay excluded when the branches merge. MeshRankTakesEveryTypeExceptRaw
fails if a merge re-enables it.

agessaman ba1dbefb59 revert(mqtt): remove IPv6 dual-stack support — measured heap exhaustion
Reverts merge ae045395 (feat/flex-ipv6, PR #25). Enabling IPv6 joins the
device into IPv6 multicast/ND processing; on multicast-heavy LANs (e.g.
with a Thread/Matter border router advertising a ULA prefix) inbound
bursts land in dynamic WiFi RX buffers in internal heap. Measured on a
Station G2 with 4 WSS brokers: min-free floor dropped 36 KB -> 18 KB,
largest free block pinned below the 16 KB publish threshold for minutes
at a time, 523 dropped publishes in 15 minutes. With IPv6 disabled the
floor and max-alloc recovered and publish skips stopped.

The feature only fed the wifi.status display line — no transport uses
IPv6 (all brokers connect over IPv4), so the fleet risk (network-
dependent degradation on unknown home LANs) buys nothing. Revisit after
the Arduino core 3.x / IDF 5.x move if IPv6 transport is ever needed;
the branch remains at feat/flex-ipv6.

Kept from the merge: the wifi.status uptime append now computes the
actual remaining space in the 160-byte reply buffer instead of assuming
a hardcoded 128, fixing a latent overflow of the snprintf bound.

agessamanandClaude Fable 5 3d80c092b7 docs(mqtt): split code-internal notes into MQTT_INTERNALS.md
The Files section (source layout, upstream integration seams, and
on-device settings migration) is developer-facing detail that sat near
the top of the otherwise user-facing MQTT_IMPLEMENTATION.md. Move it to
a new MQTT_INTERNALS.md and link it from the bottom of the main doc.

agessamanandClaude Fable 5 55110ffa94 fix(mqtt): migrate observer settings from legacy /com_prefs on upgrade
The NodePrefs->MQTTPrefs split (2eb41bae) left the promised one-time
migration of the old /com_prefs trailing block unimplemented, so users
upgrading an observer node silently lost SNMP, radio-watchdog, and
fault-alert configuration (alerts reset to off; PSK/hashtag/region wiped).

loadPrefsInt now detects an old-format /com_prefs by its size, skips the
legacy zero-filled MQTT gap (6-slot or 3-slot era), and recovers the
trailing observer block into a LegacyObserverTail (reusing the old
firmware's byte291/292 heuristic and per-field availability guards).
loadMQTTPrefs applies those values when the loaded /mqtt_prefs predates
the appended observer fields, and both files are rewritten once in the
current layout. rx_boosted_gain/flood_max_* are also recovered from the
correct offsets (previously read from inside the old gap and reset).

Verified with a host-side harness that round-trips the real old-firmware
savePrefs (from 2eb41bae^) through the new load path across upgrade,
fresh-install, upstream-format, 3-slot-era, truncated, and legacy-variant
cases, plus a non-MQTT-build variant. Updates the stale migration comments
and documents the CommonCLI_Observer seam in MQTT_IMPLEMENTATION.md.

agessaman 7e0ffdbea3 feat(mqtt): clarify custom endpoint requirements in code and documentation
Updated MQTT configuration to succeed when port is defined in mqttN.server but not explicitly set in mqttN.port. Updated documentation to specify that when a full
URL with a scheme is provided, the port setting is optional. Added an
example for local development using a plain WebSocket URL, enhancing
clarity for users configuring custom MQTT brokers.

agessaman 7416d632b9 feat(mqtt): add NTP server configuration and diagnostics commands
Implemented new commands for configuring and diagnosing NTP server
settings in the MQTT bridge. Users can now set a custom NTP server
and probe connectivity to configured servers. This enhancement
improves time synchronization reliability for JWT authentication
and provides better diagnostics for NTP connectivity issues.
