Synapse exposes a health check endpoint for use by reverse proxies.
Each configured HTTP listener has a `/health` endpoint which always returns
200 OK (and doesn't get logged).
200 OK (and doesn't get logged). This is a *liveness* check only: it reflects
whether the process is running, not whether it is able to serve traffic. Use it
for a liveness probe (e.g. Kubernetes' `livenessProbe`), where failure should
cause the process to be restarted.
## Readiness check endpoint
Each configured HTTP listener also has a `/ready` endpoint (also not logged),
which reports whether the process is currently able to serve traffic. It
checks that the database can be reached, that (for worker processes) the
connection to the main process is up, and that the process has finished its
startup sequence, returning `200 OK` with a JSON body if all checks pass, or
`503 Service Unavailable` with a JSON body indicating which check(s) failed
otherwise, for example:
```json
{"db": true, "replication": true, "startup_complete": false}
```
Use this for a *readiness* probe (e.g. Kubernetes' `readinessProbe`), where
failure should remove the instance from load-balancer rotation without
restarting it. Do not use `/ready` as a liveness probe: a transient database or
replication outage would then cause every instance to be restarted at once.
