Humanity has never possessed a greater capacity to connect, yet the authority to establish a connection is becoming increasingly concentrated. Accounts determine whether an identity exists. Applications hold the relationships between people. Platforms decide whether information can arrive. Location, searches, reading, conversations, and movement accumulate into digital records that can become more complete than a person's memory and more influential than a person's own explanation.
On a walk, the useful things are straightforward: see where you are, find a
route, keep a record and stay in touch with your group. Trail Mate puts those
tools on a device with its own controls, local maps and a radio. Installed map
data remains useful when Internet access is unavailable; communication uses
the protocol and links you configure.
When communication gateways, identity systems, accumulated data, and interpretive authority converge in a few centers, convenience gradually becomes governing power. Algorithms begin to decide who is visible, who is suspicious, who receives an opportunity, and who is excluded. Those decisions disappear into models, policies, and risk scores where responsibility is difficult to identify and appeal is difficult to reach. Countless local choices made in the name of efficiency can accumulate into a vast and silent algorithmic bureaucracy.
**The person carrying the device should keep control of its identity and data.**
The device holds its author key. Maps, recordings, messages and contacts have
local storage. Public discovery, direct contacts, Team position and personal
tracks have separate sharing rules, so joining a network does not have to mean
handing one service your complete activity history.
**Decentralization returns the authority to establish digital life to the individual.** A person can generate and hold an identity. Contacts can remain in personally controlled storage. Messages can move directly between devices. Position can be shared only with recipients selected by the user. Changing platforms leaves identity intact. A discontinued service leaves human relationships intact. Infrastructure failure leaves people with the ability to communicate and coordinate.
When a larger screen helps, use the browser or Center to edit settings, prepare
maps or work on a trail. The device can authorize a specific publication while
the computer handles its network connection. Independent directories index
signed content, and recipients can verify the author's signature. Publishing
still makes that chosen content public; the privacy section above explains what
others can retain.
**Trail Mate turns that authority into a system people can hold.** It runs on personally held embedded devices and Linux portable terminals, keeping identity, contacts, messages, position, maps, and tracks on the user's devices. Meshtastic, MeshCore, and Reticulum provide selectable decentralized network paths. Offline maps and on-device TAK capabilities keep navigation, situational awareness, and team coordination available beyond the public Internet.
Trail Mate is something close to a decentralized phone. Users hold their data directly, choose their connection paths, and can understand every sharing relationship. Links may be narrow, device resources may be constrained, and the environment may be completely off-grid; identity, communication, navigation, and coordination remain in human hands.
Portable files, device-held identity and independently operated services give
people alternatives when a provider changes or disappears. That is the reason
for bringing offline navigation, Meshtastic, MeshCore, Reticulum and team tools
together: keep a useful field companion in the user's hands.
> **Connection is a capability people can hold. Trail Mate keeps that capability in the hands of each user.**

Pager, T-Deck and Wio L2 use the same grid with a column count that adapts to the
available width. Pager uses W/A/S/D or the wheel to select an app, V to switch
between apps and widgets, and H for Help. Touch devices expose the same pages
through their controls and gestures.

# Launcher and widget screenshot sources
`pager-menu.png` was refreshed on October 17, 2026 from the actual production
LVGL native preview. It includes Music and the H Help / V Widgets footer. The
UI sources match the 1.0.0 candidate; device/service values are simulated.
`tests/site/menu-widgets-native.test.mjs` captures the launcher, and the Pager
input regression drives its keypad/encoder navigation and Help behavior.
The other images retain earlier native launcher/widget captures. They illustrate
those layouts and are not camera captures, radio tests or proof of physical
input acceptance. Captions and support claims should use the applicable board's
separate verification record.
